Presenter: Dr. Álvaro Huerta
Bio: Dr. Álvaro Huerta is an Associate Professor in Urban & Regional Planning and Ethnic & Women’s Studies at California State Polytechnic University. Among other scholarly publications, he’s the author of Reframing the Latino Immigration Debate: Towards a Humanistic Paradigm and Defending Latina/o Immigrant Communities: The Xenophobic Era of Trump and Beyond. He holds a Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.A. in urban planning and a B.A. in history from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Short Description: Dr. Álvaro Huerta will present a talk based on the historical and current systemic patterns of state violence against racialized groups and immigrants in the U.S. From the U.S. war against Mexico during the mid-1800s to the mass deportations of Mexicans during the early-1900s & mid-1900s to the murder of Vanessa Guillén on a military base to the police murder of George Floyd, this talk will shed light on the oppressive conditions of los de abajo / those on the bottom. In terms of hope, Dr. Huerta will also discuss the significance of mass protests and activist efforts against systemic racism to help build and image a better world for us all.
